Peter supported women's rights, suffrage, and prohibition of alcohol. He also condemned slavery and abuse of Indians. As a result of his hospitality, the Indians often stopped to talk to Peter as he worked in his orchards. Gideon was so committed to his apples that during the Sioux uprising of 1862, he did not leave his homestead out of fear that his fruit trees would be trampled.
